Project partners including the Mississippi River Parkway Commission/Great River Road recently celebrated the official launch of the Mississippi River Geotourism MapGuide website. The landmark project is a historically significant digital asset for global and national guests who visit or live in the 10 states along the Mississippi River. From New Orleans and Natchez in the River’s Delta region to Lake Itasca, Minnesota, at the headwaters, locals submitted nearly 2,000 nominations of their favorite points of interest; historic, cultural and natural landmarks; events and local festivals; music experiences; artisans and attractions, which capture the region’s unique character, heritage and beauty.
America's Greatest Drive
The Great River Road National Scenic Byway follows the course of the Mississippi RIver through ten states. Minnesota's Great River Road is a network of roadways offering a bounty of river experiences in a parkway setting. It spans 565 miles, 43 communities, 20 counties, three tribes and six unique destination areas. From the headwaters at Lake Itasca to the bluffs of southeast Minnesota, the parkway spans the state's distinct natural and scenic regions.
